Nathan Hokama

Principal

Nathan Hokama, principal of Strategic Communication Solutions, has more than 25 years of experience guiding large corporations, small nonprofit organizations, and government agencies in building and managing their reputation. Nathan has collaborated with executive leaders to plan and execute communications programs for major change initiatives, executive leadership transitions, rebranding initiatives, high-profile litigation, Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings, and other potentially controversial issues. Strategic Communication Solutions celebrated its 20th year of service in 2024.

Prior to establishing Strategic Communication Solutions, Nathan served as corporate communications manager for Tesoro Hawaiʻi, where he was involved with numerous high-profile issues, including the State’s anti-trust lawsuit against oil companies, neighborhood outrage over unplanned petroleum refinery emissions, a major oil spill impacting a neighbor island, underground storage tank remediation, public and legislative scrutiny over gasoline pricing, and organizational restructurings and divestitures. In that role, he also led “away team” exercises in oil spill drills in Alaska, Washington State and Texas and is experienced in leading joint information centers.

Nathan also served as media relations consultant and spokesperson for The Carlyle Group, a Washington, D.C.-based international private equity firm that acquired Verizon Communication Inc.’s Hawaiʻi assets and became Hawaiian Telcom. Nathan also served as corporate communications manager at American Savings Bank, working in conjunction with parent company Hawaiian Electric Industries.

He holds a bachelor of arts degree in journalism and philosophy, University of Hawaiʻi-Mānoa. He is a past president of the Hawai’i chapters of the Public Relations Society of America, and International Association of Business Communicators and was named the Gregg W. Perry Public Relations Professional of the Year in 2008.

Nathan currently serves as a board member of Hui Pohala, a nonprofit organization to help fully develop home- and community-based palliative care ecosystem in Hawai‘i. In collaboration with the Hawai‘i Primary Care Association and the Hawai‘i Island Community Health Center, he is helping to lead a new initiative to reach individuals in underserved communities who may not be accessing primary care and may need palliative care.

He is also a board member with the American Judicature Society and is currently collaborating with judges and attorneys to address the issue of judicial vacancies to fill positions for judges in the court systems across the islands. He has also worked on the issue of judicial security to protect the lives of judges and their families.
